"Because we are sinners, simply encouraging people to be who they are in the name of authenticity is dangerous because it can easily be taken as a license to sin without repentance. In the opening chapter of Romans, Paul says that people are prone to be real rather than repentant because they love to sin, which explains why Jesus told us to deny ourselves rather than to be ourselves."
Sin is deceptive. The heart is wicked, and we'll never "know ourselves". So think for a second if our "being real" isn't just being sinners. Broken is us whether we're real about it or not, but what about repentant and redeemed - real in Christ, not ourselves?

You know, that's something I'd never considered before... and something that I definitely think we all need to ponder. That sounds like a very cool book, based on what you said and what Patrick talked about yesterday.
